Jag duckar reflexmässigt, igen, när jag hör det dova brummandet ovanför mig, men de är inte intresserade av mig, utan bara att komma hem till sitt bo. Har ställt upp kameran på stativet och väntar med fingret på avtryckaren. Kameran är inställd på 1/800 dels sekund och bländare 5,6 och på grund av det något mulna vädret behöver jag ha ISO 1000 för att få till det med zoomen på 200 mm.

I duck reflexively, again, when I hear the muffled humming above me, but they are not interested in me, only to come home to their nest. Has set up the camera on the tripod and is waiting with his finger on the shutter button. The camera is set to 1/800 partly second and aperture 5.6 and due to the slightly cloudy weather I need ISO 1000 to get it with the zoom of 200 mm.

Jag låter exponeringarna rulla iväg när bålgetingen ovanför mig går in för landning. Det rasslar till och 5-6 bilder blir tagna. Det går för fort och är för smått för kamerans autofokus ska hinna med, så jag har ställt den på fast skärpeinställning och hoppas på det bästa!

I let the exposures roll away when the hornet above me goes in for landing. It rattles and 5-6 pictures are taken. It goes too fast and is too small for the camera’s autofocus to catch up, so I have set it to fixed focus and hope for the best!

Det är mitt första försök att fotografera bålgetingar och sommaren lider redan mot sitt slut. Det är mitten av september och det är lite kyligt i luften, men de är väldigt aktiva. Resultat blir inte så bra tekniskt, men jag tycker att jag lyckas hitta något annat i tre av bilderna. Fick ta till Tone Mapping i Raw Therapee för att få fram bålgetingarna mer mot den gråa bakgrunden.

This is my first attempt to photograph horns and the summer is already suffering towards the end. It is mid-September and it is a bit chilly in the air, but they are very active. Results are not so good technically, but I think I manage to find something else in 3 of the pictures. Had to use Tone Mapping in Raw Therapee to bring out the horns more against the gray background.

Efter några dagar var jag tillbaka vid boet för att se om jag kunde få några bättre bilder och då främst bättre ljus. Solen sken denna dag men moln seglade ganska frekvent framför solen. Sedan gällde det att vänta ut skuggorna som vandrade över bohålet från de närmaste träden och boträdets grenar. Sist så behövde ju också bålgetingarna visa upp sig när tillslut solen låg rätt!

After a few days I was back at the nest to see if I could get some better pictures and then mainly better light. The sun was shining this day but clouds sailed quite frequently in front of the sun. Then it was necessary to wait out the shadows that wandered over the den from the nearest trees and the branches of the nest tree. Lastly, the horns also needed to show up when finally the sun was right!

Men genom att det var en hyfsat varm dag så var det full aktivitet vid boet. Det brummade av bålgetingar som lämnade boet och ännu mer hördes det när bålgetingarna kom in för landning. De tog några lovar runt trädet och sedan hängde de i luften ett tag utanför hålet. Vissa störtade sedan rakt in i hålet medan andra landade i öppningen och gick in.

Men det var alltid någon som höll vakt i öppningen, så jag undrar hur hon kunde hålla koll på de som fort rakt in i hålet?

But because it was a fairly hot day, there was full activity at the nest. It was humming horns that left the nest and even more was heard when the horns came in for landing. They took a few turns around the tree and then hung in the air for a while outside the hole. Some then plunged straight into the hole while others landed in the opening and went inside.

But there was always someone watching over the opening, so I wonder how she could keep track of those who went straight into the hole?

Jag fick dock se vakthonan i aktion när hon attackerade en inkommande bålgeting och de surrade sammantrasslade ett tag i luften men hamnade tillslut i gräset vid trädets rot. Där verkade det som om inkräktaren gav upp.

När jag fick loss kameran från stativet och fotade bålgetingen som var på marken såg det nästan ut som om den första hade brutit nacken, för huvudet satt i en annan vinkel. Men sedan rätade den upp sig och satte sig att tvätta sig först på en kvist och sedan på mitt ben!

However, I saw the female guard in action when she attacked an incoming hornet and the buzzers tangled in the air for a while but ended up in the grass at the root of the tree. There it seemed as if the intruder gave up.

When I removed the camera from the tripod and photographed the hornet that was on the ground, it almost looked as if it had broken its neck, because its head was at a different angle. But then it straightened up and sat down to wash, first on a twig and then on my leg!

Efter ett tag så bestämde jag mig för att testa några nya vinklar för att få bättre ljus. Jag lyfte upp kameran med stativet och chansade på några manuella inställningar och avfyrade med självutlösaren och max antal bilder. Det blev inga lyckade resultat av det.

After a while, I decided to try some new angles to get better light. I lifted the camera with the tripod and took a chance on some manual settings and fired with the self-timer and the maximum number of pictures. There were no successful results.

Sedan ställde jag mig lite närmare och samtidigt så föll solljuset in och badade bohålan i ljus. Jag hann ta några bilder innan jag upptäckte att fler bålgetingar lämnade hålan och började cirkulera ovanför mig. Jag backade undan men lämnade kameran kvar för att se om det bara var mig de var irriterade över. Men de fortsatte att surra kring kameran, så jag bestämde mig för att backa undan till min förra plats och det tyckte de var okej, för de drog sig tillbaka och visade mig inget mer intresse.

Then I stood a little closer and at the same time the sunlight fell in and bathed the den in light. I had time to take some pictures before I discovered that more hornets left the cave and started circulating above me. I backed away but left the camera to see if it was just me they were annoyed with. But they kept buzzing around the camera, so I decided to go back to my previous place and they thought it was okay, because they withdrew and showed me no more interest.

Försökte mig på några bilder till trots att solen hade försvunnit bakom både moln och grenverk. Inga strålande bilder blev det men däremot fick jag med en väldigt aktiv vakthona och bålgetingarnas arbete med att kontrollera sina systrar som kommer med mat eller bara vill hem.

Tried some more pictures even though the sun had disappeared behind both clouds and branches. There were no brilliant pictures, but on the other hand I got a very active female guard and the horns’ work to control their sisters who come with food or just want to go home.

Med ISO 800 och en uppskalad delförstoring blev det ett mer målat porträtt av henne på sin post utanför bohålan.

Jag återvände in sista gång i mitten av oktober. Det var då klart kyligare väder och bålgetingarna satt mest i hålans kant. Några enstaka in- och utflygningar under den tid jag var där så det fanns inte många möjligheter att få till några aktionbilder.

I returned last time in mid-October. It was then clearly cooler weather and the hornets were mostly at the edge of the hole. A few occasional arrivals and departures during the time I was there, so there were not many opportunities to get any action pictures.

Däremot så testade jag att använda blixt för att se hur det blev. Det fanns då bara en möjlighet att få en bild pga att det inte går att ta seriebilder med blixt, så resultatet blev mest bålgetingar flygandes utanför skärpan.

Däremot så kunde jag avsluta med nedan porträtt. En hösttrött bålgeting sittandes på kanten av sin bohåla. Det som kan vara lite intressant med bilden är att det streck som går från bålgetingen in till boet är benet på en lockespindel. Om den bara var där av en slump eller inte vet jag inte, men den uppehöll sig precis innanför bohålets kant.

However, I tried to use flash to see how it turned out. There was then only one chance to get a picture due to the fact that it is not possible to take serial pictures with flash, so the result was mostly hornets flying outside the focus.

However, I was able to finish with the portrait below. An autumn-tired hornet sitting on the edge of its burrow. What can be a little interesting about the picture is that the line that goes from the hornet to the nest is the leg of a harvestman. I do not know if it was just there by chance or not, but it was just sitting inside the edge of the burrow.

Ett roligt projekt, trots min kameras tillkortakommanden och ett inte allt för anpassat objektiv för insektsfotografering. Det som är bra med bålgetingar är att de är stora insekter och därför lättare att få med på bild! Som vanligt fann jag det utmanande och spännande att skapa något med det material jag har och jag är väldigt nöjd med vissa av bilderna, som jag tycker porträtterar bålgetingarna på ett intressant sätt.

A fun project, despite my camera’s shortcomings and a not too adapted lens for insect photography. The good thing about hornets is that they are large insects and therefore easier to get in the picture! As usual, I found it challenging and exciting to create something with the material I have, and I am very happy with some of the pictures, that I think portray the horns in an interesting way.
