Drog till Herröskatan, ett naturreservat i Lemland, Åland, en kväll i mitten av augusti. Kameran hade legat på hyllan en månad nästan, så det var dags att ut och lufta den, samt att min fru ville komma ut en sväng med hunden.

Went to Herröskatan, a nature reserve in Lemland, The Åland Islands, one evening in mid-August. The camera had been on the shelf for almost a month, so it was time to go out and use it again and my wife wanted to take a turn with the dog.

Inget speciellt väder eller mål utan mer en utflykt för att ta några snabba bilder. Stativet kom inte ens med ut i bilen.

No special weather or goal but more of an excursion to take some quick pictures. The tripod did not even come out of the car.

Var lite spontan och fotade från låg vinkel där det inte gick att se genom sökare, för då hade jag varit tvungen att ligga i vattnet! Försökte få med solen för att se hur effekten blev med ett så starkt ljus rakt in i linsen.

Fick med mig en fin bild på Buskskär med trevliga moln över som jag tycker skapar spänning till bilden.

Was a bit spontaneous and took photos from a low angle where it was not possible to see through the viewfinder, because then I would have had to lie in the water! Tried to get the sun to see how the effect was with such a strong light straight into the lens.

Got with me a nice picture on Buskskär when we were at the far end of the headland with nice clouds over which I think creates excitement to the picture.

När jag satt hemma och jobbade med bilderna så tyckte jag att jag inte fick fram något som tog tag i mig. Jag sökte inspiration och kom på att jag sett en artikel om svartvita fotografier. Den grekiske fotografen George Digalakis som jag följer på Instagram har skrivit om Tonal range i sin blogg.

Jag har långt kvar och ett hinder är min okunskap i bildbehandlingsprogrammen! Jag förstår att många fotografer kan sälja förinställningar för tex Photoshop, för det tar en oändlig tid att hitta rätt bland alla möjlighet som finns att manipulera en bild!

When I sat at home and worked with the pictures, I thought I did not come up with something that grabbed me. I was looking for inspiration and realized that I had seen an article about black and white photographs. The Greek photographer George Digalakis that I follow on Instagram has written about Tonal range in his blog.

I have a long way to go and a holdback is my lack of knowledge in the image processing programs! I understand that many photographers can sell presets for eg Photoshop, because it takes an infinite time to find the right one among all the possibilities that exist to manipulate an image!

Men summan av kardemumman är att skapa ordentliga högdagrar och lågdagrar, alltså mörk och ljust och sedan fylla ut mellanrummet med alla nyanser av gråtoner där emellan. Jag kom en bit i alla fall och jag ska jobba vidare på detta. Att ha en bild där man redan från början har tänkt i dessa termer kan också underlätta än att försöka skapa något med det man har.

But the sum of the cardamom is to create proper highs and lows, ie dark and light and then fill the gap with all shades of gray in between. I came a bit anyway and I will continue to work on this. Having an image where you have thought in these terms from the beginning can also be easier than trying to create something with what you have.

Som avslutning fångade en sten min uppmärksamhet och jag kände att jag ville göra något med den. Den nästan lyste där i dunklet under de stora lövträden. Testade på att försöka lyfta fram den i GIMP utan att överdriva.

Sedan kände jag för att jobba fram något annat. Min tanke var att försöka lyfta fram dess utsatthet där den låg ensam i gräset men också styrkan som själva stenen har inneboende i sig.

Jag testade och läste om olika filter och effekter men det blev bara ett svartvitt foto tillslut. Hade önskat något mer men genom att jag inte vet själv vad jag letar efter är det svårt att hitta det i ett bildbehandlingsprogram som tex GIMP!

In the end of the trip, a stone caught my attention and I felt I wanted to do something with it. It almost shone there in the darkness under the big deciduous trees. Tested trying to highlight it in GIMP without exaggerating.

Then I felt like working on something else. My thought was to try to highlight its vulnerability where it lay alone in the grass but also the strength that the stone itself has inherent in itself.

I tested and read about different filters and effects but it was just a black and white photo in the end. Would have liked something more, but since I do not know myself what I am looking for, it is difficult to find it in an image processing program such as GIMP!

Solen har bestämt sig för att gå ned 23:10 så det gäller att stanna uppe för att kunna fånga en solnedgång när det börjar närma sig midsommar! Förutsättningarna för att skapa några HDR – bilder kanske inte var de bästa, för en molnbank uppenbarade sig i väster och täckte effektivt solen men lite ljus lyckades ta sig över molnkanten.

The sun has decided to go down 23:10 so it is important to stay up to be able to catch a sunset when it starts to approach midsummer! The conditions for creating some HDR images may not have been the best, because a bank of clouds appeared in the west and effectively covered the sun, but some light managed to get over the edge of the cloud.

När väl solen försvunnit bakom horisonten återstod ett ganska mjukt ljus och vips så hittade myggorna fram. De har jag inte sett mycket av under denna vår men jag har inte heller varit ute så mycket i naturen efter solnedgång. Mitt jobb har tagit mycket kraft och då behöver man sova på nätterna!

Once the sun had disappeared behind the horizon, a fairly soft light remained and suddenly the mosquitoes found their way. I have not seen much of them this spring but I have not been out in nature so much after sunset. My job has taken a lot of energy and then you need to sleep at night!

Tog flera bilder med olika exponering för att kunna jobba med HDR (High Dynamic Range)-bilder. Tänkte att solnedgången skulle skapa kontraster med mörka partier av skog och stenar där flera exponeringar då skulle kunna lyfta fram strukturen igen i dessa partier. Men också kunna bevara färgerna på himlen som annars har lätt att bli utfrätta när man exponerar efter de mörka partierna.

Took several pictures with different exposures to be able to work with HDR (High Dynamic Range) pictures. Thought that the sunset would create contrasts with dark parts of forest and rocks where several exposures could then highlight the structure again in these parts. But also be able to preserve the colors of the sky that are otherwise easy to be over exposed when exposed for the dark parts.

Två av bilderna i bloggen är sammansatta med hjälp av GIMP:s lagermasker för att lyfta fram olika delar av bilderna. Här finns en handledning från Davies Media Design som jag använt mig av men även Parker Photografic har gjort en med hur du mer specifikt kan välja vilka delar som du vill lyfta fram.

Three of the images in the blog are composed using GIMP’s layer masks to highlight different parts of the images. Here is a guide from Davies Media Design that I have used, but Parker Photografic has also done one with how you can more specifically choose which parts you want to highlight.

Men jag tycker att jag har fått fram både det mörka och det ljusa i de flesta bilderna, genom att bara jobba med dem i Raw Therapee och att just för de ljusförhållanden som var under denna kväll, inte krävdes några HDR-bilder. Men visst, bilden på stenarna i HDR fick fram ett väldigt speciellt ljus. Roligt att experimentera var det i alla fall!

Avslutade med en längre exponering på den väldigt karakteristiska stenen som jag gillar, när mörkret började falla på!

But I think I have brought out both the dark and the light in the most of the pictures, by just working with them in Raw Therapee and just precisely for the light conditions that were during this evening, no HDR images were required. But of course, the image of the stones in HDR brought out a very special light. It was fun to experiment anyway!

Finished with a longer exposure on the very characteristic stone that I like, when darkness began to fall on!
