Hemoglobin, the Åland punk band!

Det ålandsbaserade punkbandet Hemoglobin öste skiten ur publiken som pausband i musiktävlingen Unga band 2021 i Mariehamn. Jag hoppas de inspirerade och inte skrämde de kvarvarande banden i tävlingen för det var verkligen fullt röj på scenen under denna något felbenämnda ”paus”!

The Åland-based punk band Hemoglobin poured the shit out of the audience as a break band in the music competition Unga band 2021 in Mariehamn. I hope they inspired and did not scare the remaining bands in the competition, because there was really a lot of noise on stage during this somewhat misnamed ”break”!

Dottern och hennes kompisar skulle dit, så jag tänkte att detta skulle kunna bli en möjlighet för mig att testa att ta bilder på en konsert och Hemoglobin gillar jag, så alltid kul att få bilder på dem!

Hemoglobin består av Lukas Mangelli-Lantz på gitarr och mest sång och Franz Fagerholm på bas och mindre sång. Deras trummis, Beppe Lantz, har rymt till Finland så de söker en ny, men i kväll satt Oscar Johansson bakom pukorna och gjorde sitt bästa för att hänga med och det gjorde han med bravur!

Insåg ganska raskt att min Nikon D7000 med en kitlinszoom på 18-200 mm inte var det bästa valet för skumma spellokaler. Visserligen en hel del ljus på scen men det räckte inte till. Insåg att jag skulle få ligga på 1000 ISO eller över för att inte få rörelseoskärpa i varje bild och detta gör att jag kommer att få mycket brus i bilderna.

Så istället för att vara avundsjuk på fotografen från en av de lokala tidningarna som var där med sin dyra kamera, gick jag in för det mer konstnärliga uttrycket istället för superskarpa porträttbilder!

My daughter and her friends were going there, so I thought this could be an opportunity for me to try taking pictures at a concert and I like Hemoglobin, so always fun to get pictures of them!

Hemoglobin consists of Lukas Lantz on guitar and mostly vocals and Franz Fagerholm on bass and less vocals. Their drummer, Beppe Lantz, has escaped to Finland, so they are looking for a new one, but tonight Oscar Johansson sat behind the tom-toms and did his best to keep up and he did it with bravura!

Realized pretty quickly that my Nikon D7000 with a kit lens zoom of 18-200 mm was not the best choice for shady music venue. Admittedly a lot of light on stage but it was not enough. Realized that I would have to be at 1000 ISO or above so as not to get motion blur in each image and this means that I will get a lot of noise in the photos.

So instead of being jealous of the photographer from one of the local newspapers who was there with her expensive camera, I went for the more artistic expression instead of super sharp portrait images!

Bruset visade sig bli hanterbart i bildbehandlingsprogrammet Raw Therapee. Detaljer smetas visserligen ut en del med Noise Reduction men det tillför också en tillåtande effekt i bilden som jag gillar.

The noise proved to be manageable in the image processing program Raw Therapee. Although details are smeared out a bit with Noise Reduction, it also adds a permissive effect in the image that I like.

En sak jag lärde mig var att se upp för mikrofoner! Min autofokus älskade micken, så många bilder har skärpan liggande på den istället för personen bakom. Detta trots att jag använde enpunktsläget både för ljusmätning och fokus. Får hålla koll på den lilla röda rutan lite bättre nästa gång!

Trummisen är också väldigt svår att fånga på bild! Just på denna konsert satt han mest i mörkret och ofta var någon iväg. Så ska man lyfta trummisen så får man jobba på och invänta de få stunder han lyfts fram i ljuset.

One thing I learned was to watch out for microphones! My autofocus loved the mic, so many pictures have the focus lying on it instead of the person behind. This despite the fact that I used the single point mode for both light metering and focus. May keep an eye on the little red box a little better next time!

The drummer is also very difficult to capture in a picture! Precisely at this concert he sat mostly in the dark and often someone was away. If you want to lift the drummer, you have to work on and wait for the few moments he lifts in the light.

Avslutade med lite experimentell fotografering. Längre slutartid och missade att ta ner ISO-värdet så det blev några överexponeringar. Men de gjorde sig tycker jag, med en effekt av Tone Mapping i Raw Therapee och så jobbade jag med Tonkurvan och Vinjetten.

Finished with some experimental photography. Longer shutter speed and failed to lower the ISO value so there were some overexposures. But they did, I think, with an effect of Tone Mapping in Raw Therapee and so I worked with the Tone Curve and the Vignette.

Testade även med att ställa kameran på en av högtalarna för att få mer rörelseoskärpa på artisterna. Kul effekt men det gäller nog att ta fler bilder för att kunna få en bild som har tilltalande rörelsemönster i sig.

Also tested by placing the camera on one of the speakers to get more motion blur on the artists. Fun effect, but it’s probably important to take more pictures to be able to get a picture that has an appealing movement pattern in it.

Jag låste kameran i början på 1000 ISO och 1/60 sekund på manuellt läge och försökte sedan hinna med att ändra bländaren. Ibland så blev det inte som jag tänkt mig, men de bilderna blev nästan mest intressanta att jobba fram.

I initially locked the camera at 1000 ISO and 1/60 second in manual mode and then tried to change the aperture. Sometimes it did not turn out as I had imagined, but those pictures became almost the most interesting to work with.

Så ska du ut och plåta en konsert så se upp för mikrofoner och testa lite längre slutartider för att få mer fart i bilderna! Överexponeringen kan man ju fixa i efterbehandlingen men jag tycker det bli mer spännande att ta några sådan bilder redan på plats!

If you should go out and shot a concert, watch out for microphones and test a little longer shutter speeds to get more speed in the pictures! The overexposure can of course be fixed in the post prossessing, but I think it will be more exciting to take such pictures on place!
